Levels

Level changes are both a challenge and an opportunity in the landscape. How do we negotiate them?

In this Oxfordshire project we were tasked with creating stability for a new large house extension which ‘teetered’ on a steeply sloping site without any useable garden space.

Solution: We explored the human desire for prospect and refuge by creating some threshold zones (terracing and steps) of a scale that suited the architecture. We then feathered into the wider landscape, retaining the natural gradient. This interface between structure and softness is endlessly interesting for us as designers; the challenge and excitement is knowing when to be bold & when to tread lightly.
